We have had a great week. It is hard to believe it's almost Thanksgiving. The school year is going so quickly. Well, you know what they say...time flies when you're having fun!
Our next social studies chapter focuses on Ohio's Native Americans. There were six historic tribes in Ohio, and we will learn about their homes, food, roles in the tribe and family, and way of life. Students will engage in research and other class activities centered around this topic.
In science with Mrs. Carter, students will learn about a variety of topics that will enhance their learning at Glen Helen such as weather, Ohio's plants and animals, birds of prey, and more. The students will engage in various hands-on activities such as dissecting an owl pellet. In art, student will design their own cloth napkin for the trip to Glen Helen.

We are working hard in math with long division and estimating quotients. Even after a lot of practicing in class, many students still need support estimating independently. Knowing the multiplication facts well helps students the most. We will focus on word problems for the next few class days and hopefully take the chapter test before going to Glen Helen.
We were just talking about how there are only six school days before Glen Helen! We are all really excited. We met with the students Friday to review the packet that was sent home in Friday folders. We answered all the kids questions, but we are sure they will have more. Please let us know if you have any questions about the trip. Attached to your child's packet is an emergency form. Please fill out the form completely and return it to school by November 30. Please note that part of the form that asks for tetanus and hepatitis B vaccine dates and another part asks if you would like supplemental accident/illness insurance for your child. Parents often overlook those two sections. Please note that you only need a doctor's signature if your child takes prescription medication. Also on November 30, the director of Glen Helen will be at MVS at 12:30 to talk to the students about their trip. Parents are welcome to attend the presentation.
Here are some important details the trip that aren't included in the packet:
Departure: Tuesday, December 6—Arrive at MVS at the regular time. Students should bring their luggage and bedding to the classroom at normal arrival time. We will board the bus at approximately 9:20 a.m.
Medications: If your child is bringing any over-the-counter or prescription medications to Glen Helen, please place them in a Ziplock type bag labeled with your child’s name and give it to your child's teacher on or before Tuesday morning. The medication(s) should be in the original packaging with clear directions either provided by you or on the label. We will keep all the medications in one place in order to insure that they are dispensed appropriately. Students may not keep any medication in their possession. We would appreciate it if you didn't send vitamins with your child unless they are prescribed by a doctor.
Camp Store: If your family decides to purchase anything from the camp store, your child will be responsible for keeping the order form and money in his/her suitcase. Remember that camp store money needs to be the exact amount in cash. There is more information about the items for sale in your child's packet. Students will visit the camp store on Tuesday afternoon at the glen.
Packing reminders: Don't forget to pack a fitted twin sheet, two warm hats, a reusable water bottle, a waterproof coat or poncho, and extra socks. Do NOT pack snacks or gum. Please try to involve your child in the packing process. It is always helpful for children to know where things are in his/her luggage.
Return: Friday, December 9 at approximately 1:30 p.m.—Parents may take students home from school at this time or come at the regular dismissal time. Extended day students will take their luggage to extended day with them. Bus riders will need to take their luggage on the bus with them. Please be certain that your child knows your plans.
Have a great Thanksgiving break with your family.
