Dear Parents,
We have had a great week that ended with a fabulous party. Thanks to all the parents and especially Dana and Paul, our grade reps, for planning, donating, and helping.
This week we have written reflections about our experiences at Glen Helen. Students wrote haiku poetry and other forms of writing. Students chose one piece to display on the bulletin board in the hallway.
Each class has worked on one part or another of the the Native American village project. Students are enjoying learning about the Ohio tribes. In groups they will focus on one tribe to research and build a village. They will then write reports and give oral presentations. They are gaining valuable skills by cooperating and creating together.
This will be our last newsletter written as a blog via Blogger. The school has adopted a new learning management system, Canvas. Starting January 6, all classroom notifications and calendar items will be communicated through Canvas. There was an email from the school explaining how to log in.
Starting in January, the color schedule is a little different from the beginning of the year. You will find a new color day schedule in your child's Friday folder.
Have an amazing break with your family!

What an amazing week!
Dear Parents,
Thank you for sharing your amazing children with us this week at Glen Helen. The naturalists told us often how smart, curious, and eager they were. You should be so proud of all of them. We sure are!
We have a few lost and found items in the classroom. If your child is missing something, it is probably here at school.
Next week will be busy reflecting on our time in the glen, wrapping up some lessons before winter break, and having the winter party on Friday. We really can't believe how fast this year is going.
Enjoy your special fourth grader this weekend!

Glen Helen!
Dear Parents,
Here are some reminders about our trip to Glen Helen tomorrow. We are all so excited!!
Departure: Tuesday, December 6—Arrive at MVS at the regular time. Students should bring their luggage and bedding to the classroom at normal arrival time. We will board the bus at approximately 9:20 a.m.
Medications: If your child is bringing any over-the-counter or prescription medications to Glen Helen, please place them in a Ziplock type bag labeled with your child’s name and give it to your child's teacher on or before Tuesday morning. The medication(s) should be in the original packaging with clear directions either provided by you or on the label. We will keep all the medications in one place in order to insure that they are dispensed appropriately. Students may not keep any medication in their possession. We would appreciate it if you didn't send vitamins with your child unless they are prescribed by a doctor.
Camp Store: If your family decides to purchase anything from the camp store, your child will be responsible for keeping the order form and money in his/her suitcase. Remember that camp store money needs to be the exact amount in cash. There is more information about the items for sale in your child's packet. Students will visit the camp store on Tuesday afternoon at the glen.
Packing reminders: Don't forget to pack a fitted twin sheet, two warm hats, a reusable water bottle, a waterproof coat or poncho, and extra socks. Do NOT pack snacks or gum. Please try to involve your child in the packing process. It is always helpful for children to know where things are in his/her luggage.
Return: Friday, December 9 to MVS at approximately 1:30 p.m.—Parents may take students home from school at this time or come at the regular dismissal time. Extended day students will take their luggage to extended day with them. Bus riders will need to take their luggage on the bus with them. Please be certain that your child knows your plans.
As always, let us know if you have questions. We will see you at the winter concert tonight.

Happy Thanksgiving!
Dear Parents,
We have had a great week. It is hard to believe it's almost Thanksgiving. The school year is going so quickly. Well, you know what they say...time flies when you're having fun!
Our next social studies chapter focuses on Ohio's Native Americans. There were six historic tribes in Ohio, and we will learn about their homes, food, roles in the tribe and family, and way of life. Students will engage in research and other class activities centered around this topic.
In science with Mrs. Carter, students will learn about a variety of topics that will enhance their learning at Glen Helen such as weather, Ohio's plants and animals, birds of prey, and more. The students will engage in various hands-on activities such as dissecting an owl pellet. In art, student will design their own cloth napkin for the trip to Glen Helen.

We are working hard in math with long division and estimating quotients. Even after a lot of practicing in class, many students still need support estimating independently. Knowing the multiplication facts well helps students the most. We will focus on word problems for the next few class days and hopefully take the chapter test before going to Glen Helen.
We were just talking about how there are only six school days before Glen Helen! We are all really excited. We met with the students Friday to review the packet that was sent home in Friday folders. We answered all the kids questions, but we are sure they will have more. Please let us know if you have any questions about the trip. Attached to your child's packet is an emergency form. Please fill out the form completely and return it to school by November 30. Please note that part of the form that asks for tetanus and hepatitis B vaccine dates and another part asks if you would like supplemental accident/illness insurance for your child. Parents often overlook those two sections. Please note that you only need a doctor's signature if your child takes prescription medication. Also on November 30, the director of Glen Helen will be at MVS at 12:30 to talk to the students about their trip. Parents are welcome to attend the presentation.
Here are some important details the trip that aren't included in the packet:

It finally feels like fall!
Dear Parents,
We thoroughly enjoy working with your children each day. Our trip to Glen Helen is only a few weeks away! Next Friday we will meet with the students to discuss the trip details and hand out a packet of important information such as the packing list and emergency form. Expect this packet to come home in your Child's Friday folder next week. On November 30, the director of Glen Helen will give a presentation to students. If you would like to come to the presentation, you are welcome. It will be at 12:30 p.m. and will last 30-40 minutes. Of course, if you have any questions, please send an email to your child's teacher.
The students are working hard in math. We are practicing long division and estimating quotients. Next we will solve word problems using multiplication and division.
Our next focus in social studies is Ohio's Native Americans. This is a favorite topic among the students. We will incorporate some research and group work into the unit of study.
We sure do have a lot to accomplish in a very short amount of time before winter break. Time is flying by! Enjoy the fall weekend with your precious children.

Back in the School Groove
Dear Parents,
Our trip to Ohio Caverns was a enriching and fun way to end this short and busy week. It was great to hear your children ooh and ahh throughout the cavern. The guides were impressed by their cave knowledge...thanks, Mrs. Carter!
It was wonderful to hear about everyone's mini immersion experiences last week. After the Halloween parade on Monday students started learning about caves and caverns with Mrs. Carter. They had science each day in order to prepare for our trip. In the classroom we focused on long division and continued reading and writing units we had started before mini immersion.
If your child would still like to participate in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, please remind him/her to bring in the box of coins on Monday. Picture retakes are scheduled for Tuesday.
A message from Sra. Swift:
The LS Spanish students celebrated Día de los Muertos this week. Each class added something to decorate our ofrenda. The fourth graders made Catrina skeleton designs. They also had the chance to sample a slice of pan de muertos (bread) from a local Mexican bakery.

Halloween Parade Monday
Dear Parents,
I forgot to mention in last week's blog that the Halloween Parade is this coming Monday. If your child would like to wear his/her costume to school that day it would be great. The lower school students "parade" through the whole school. It's a fun MVS tradition. Parents are welcome to stay after dropping off their children and watch the parade, which starts at 8:15 a.m. Your child should bring a change of clothes for the remainder of the day. Students should bring in their Trick-or-Treat for Unicef boxes by Thursday, November 3.
Next week we will go to Ohio Caverns on Thursday and there is no school on Friday for students. Have a great weekend!
